Sugar Free Grenadine version 2.0

A while back, we posted on how to make Sugar Free Grenadine.  Since that first post over two years ago, it has painfully come to our attention that the Diet Cran-Pomegranate has been discontinued.

This puts us, the no-carb imbiber, in a bit of a predicament if we want to enjoy anything with grenadine as an additive.

As our supply of Diet Cran-Pomegranate slowly dwindled, we searched high and low for any alternatives that could be find. Anything from powdered versions, to skinny versions.

Sugar Free Amaro

MDR Labs is proud to introduce the newest member of our Sugar Free liqueur recipes, Sugar Free Amaro!

For a little history lesson, Sugar Free Amaro is an herbal liqueur that is commonly imbibed as an after-dinner digestif. Digestifs were theorized to aid in the digestive process. Sugar free amaro is only one example of a digestif, others include brandy/cognac or fortified wines (like sherry or port).

Sugar Free Castle Habour Special

The Sugar Free Castle Habour Special is a refreshing and fruity drink that is sure to please the pallete.  The Sugar Free Castle Habour Special comes to us from originally from 1928 and was first referenced in The Gentleman’s Companion*, by Charles H. Baker, Jr.

While the cocktail calls for an aged rum, we swapped it out for a spiced rum. It still tasted great. I’m sure with an aged rum, it would have a little less spice and a little more woody richness, but combined with the citrus of the lime, the unmistakeable pineapple flavor, and the grenadine, I’m sure it will be equally delicious.

The Sugar Free Paloma

The Sugar Free Paloma recipe comes to us from Imbibe Magazine.  It was recommended while we were looking up some fun Cinco de Mayo cocktails.  But now that we’ve tried it and found it so refreshing, this may become a nice go-to cocktail for those hot summer days!

The Sugar Free Paloma is a slightly different take on a classic margarita, but with grapefruit flavor in addition to the lime.  Honest, after trying the Paloma, I may not go back to the margarita!

Sugar Free Coquito

The Sugar Free Coquito is something we stumbled upon when investigating milk substitutes.  Why replace milk? Carbs.  They don’t have much, but they do exist.  We usually use heavy cream in lieu of actual milk, but that can add a viscosity that can be a little overwhelming if more than an ounce is called for.

Also, there are cocktails that call for 4 ounces of milk, which obviously rules out using the heavy cream.

Sugar Free Aviation Cocktail

It was only a matter of time before the Sugar Free Aviation Cocktail was mixed after we made our Sugar Free Maraschino Liqueur!

The Sugar Free Aviation Cocktail is an old one that dates back to 1916, where it was first published in Recipes for Mixed Drinks, by Hugo Ensslin.  It was also later published in the Savoy Cocktail Book, where it inexplicably omits the (IMHO) very necessary Creme de Violette.  It’s also rumored that it was named because it’s color resembles that of the sky.

Sugar Free Maraschino Liqueur

In any home bar, one necessity that has managed to elude us thus far is the Sugar Free Marachino Liqueur.  Well, it has taken some considerable research and time, but the MDR Labs have finally conquered this essential liqueur for any bar.

Our research really specifies marasca cherry pits, which are bitter, as opposed to the standard grocery store cherries and are used during the distillation phase in order to extract some of those flavors.  But finding dried cherry pits is quite an ordeal and honestly, not one that we’ve been able to successfully complete.

Sugar Free Imperial Fizz (aka the Whiskey Fizz)

The Sugar Free Imperial Fizz (aka the Whiskey Fizz), is a slight twist on the regular recipe.  Normally, light rum is not included at all, but we found this variation on Drinksmixer, which we thought really added a nice nuance of fruitiness to the drink.

Sugar Free Pumpkin Spice Cocktail

The Sugar Free Pumpkin Spice Cocktail is an original MDR Labs creation!  The flavors of bourbon, pumpkin, cream, and the Sugar Free Allspice Dram meld together wonderfully in this new autumnal cocktail that can be served either cold or hot!

That’s right, with a little effort, the same combination of reagents can completely transform the Sugar Free Pumpkin Spice Cocktail from a cool and refreshing seasonal beverage, to a slightly spicier version to warm your innards in the cold fall evenings!
