The Sugar Free Charles Cocktail is a good one if you like Sweet Vermouth and Cognac (and really, who doesn’t?).
This simple little cocktail comes to us from DrinksMixer.com and is a little nebulous in it’s description. The original recipe calls for a dash of bitters…
Which, of course, could mean absolutely anything! There’s a bitters bundle over at Amazon that contains Old Fashioned, Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit, Peach, and Mint Bitters and another that boasts Plum, Aztec Chocolate, Cherry, Cranberry, Rhubarb, and Celery Bitters. That doesn’t even include Angostura or Peychaud’s!
There’s even an entire book that features drinks that heavily rely on Bitters, called (oddly enough) Bitters: A Spirited History of a Classic Cure-All, with Cocktails, Recipes, and Formulas, by Brad Thomas Parsons. This book has some serious recipes in there that may not be for the faint of heart! We tried a recipe called the Angostura Fizz and boy, was that flavorful!
In our trial, we used Angostura Bitters, since whenever we read bitters, we automatically thing Angostura. But with the many and varied bitters options out there today (and even some that have been newly rediscovered like Boker’s (recreated in 2009 from a lost recipe originally created in 1828!)
We invite you to try as many different combinations as you’d like! Let us know what works for you!
