Sugar Free Amaro

MDR Labs is proud to introduce the newest member of our Sugar Free liqueur recipes, Sugar Free Amaro!

For a little history lesson, Sugar Free Amaro is an herbal liqueur that is commonly imbibed as an after-dinner digestif. Digestifs were theorized to aid in the digestive process. Sugar free amaro is only one example of a digestif, others include brandy/cognac or fortified wines (like sherry or port).

Sugar Free Maraschino Liqueur

In any home bar, one necessity that has managed to elude us thus far is the Sugar Free Marachino Liqueur.  Well, it has taken some considerable research and time, but the MDR Labs have finally conquered this essential liqueur for any bar.

Our research really specifies marasca cherry pits, which are bitter, as opposed to the standard grocery store cherries and are used during the distillation phase in order to extract some of those flavors.  But finding dried cherry pits is quite an ordeal and honestly, not one that we’ve been able to successfully complete.

Sugar Free Bohemian Cocktail

The Sugar Free Bohemian Cocktail * was adapted from the regular old Bohemian Recipe, with the obvious MDR Lab twists.  Cocktail Virgin claims that the original recipe was created by Misty Kalkofen over at the Green Street Grill in 2008.  However, you can also find the recipe reported at St. Germain’s website.

Between the two references, there are a couple different gin options.  MDR Labs try to recreate cocktails as close to the original, so we went with Beefeater.  Feel free to experiment, though (responsibly of course), as you never know what might work better for your palette.

Sugar Free Elderflower Cordial

MDR Labs is proud to bring you our newest spirit adaptation, the Sugar Free Elderflower Cordial!  The original source recipe comes to us from our friends at SeriousEats.com.

Elderflower cordials have a long history, and while elderberries do come from the same plant, please do not mistake this for an elderberry cordial!

The Sugar Free Elderflower Cordial is surprisingly easy to make and relatively inexpensive, as well.  Our friends at Starwest Botanicals are, again, a good source of the necessary dry ingredients for our extractions.

Sugar Free Triple Sec

The Sugar Free Triple Sec that we made here at the MDR Labs is truly an innovative creation. Triple Sec, Cointreau, and Grand Marnier are all forms of orange liqueurs and was originally known as Curaçao.  Curaçao Triple Sec used to be the brand name of Curaçao, but somewhere along the way the Curaçao got dropped and Triple Sec became the comon nomenclature.  The Cointreau and Grand Marnier versions are just  name-brand versions, just as Kleenex is a name-brand version of a tissue.  So when you see recipes for an orange liqueur, it may call for Curaçao, Triple Sec, Orange Liqueur, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier.  Only a little confusing, I know…
